LISA AND HER KOREAN DRAMAS

Lisa is absolutely obsessed with Korean dramas. If you see her, she’s always watching the newest show streaming on her phone, pull-of-the-month plot and actor notwithstanding. She knows. She senses. She’s her own source of information on every new release around.

She can’t speak Korean, but we tease her about how she speaks better Korean than English now, which is the result of binge-watching so many dramas with subtitles. She is forever dramatic, playing up those romantic scenes with a silly flourish whenever she bumps into someone whose face she recognises from the show. My favourite was during the neighbourhood block party one year, when she burst into tears when kimchi got spilled on someone’s shirt. That was the same thing that happened in her favourite drama. And, to be honest, we humour her because it is nice to witness someone living life so passionately and vicariously through fictional K-drama characters.
