Day 21

Day 21 (January 21): Trump Inauguration—What Now?

Well, here we are again. Another inauguration. This time, it’s Trump making his return to the stage. And it’s hard not to wonder—will he be good for the world? For Southeast Asia? For Malaysia? Heck, what about the Middle East? These are big questions, ones that carry weight well beyond the borders of the United States.

You might be thinking, “Why care? It’s not our country.” And yeah, fair point. Why should we be paying attention to an inauguration happening thousands of miles away? But, c’mon, this is the USA we’re talking about—the so-called "world police," the country that’s always sticking its nose into international affairs, whether we like it or not. Their policies ripple out and affect everyone else. Trade deals, defense pacts, diplomatic relations—one bad move and suddenly the balance of power shifts.

So, back to the big question: will Trump be good for the world? For Southeast Asia? Malaysia? I honestly don’t know. It feels like every time he gets a chance at power, the world holds its breath, waiting to see how he’ll shake things up. Sometimes it’s a trade war here, a policy shift there, and suddenly everyone’s scrambling to adjust. For us in Southeast Asia, the US has always been a big player, especially in terms of trade and security. But when it comes to Trump, who knows which way the winds will blow?

As for the Middle East, well, we’ve all seen how things have gone in the past few years. It’s a complex region, and Trump’s approach has been... unpredictable, to say the least. Some people argue he’s been a friend to some, but others feel the effects of his actions in ways that only make the region more volatile.

At the end of the day, it’s hard not to care. Whether we like it or not, the US has a massive influence on global politics. And even though we’re not American, when they sneeze, the rest of the world catches a cold. As much as I’d like to tune it all out, it’s like trying to ignore the weather when you’re planning your day. You can’t control it, but it sure as heck affects everything you do. So here we are, watching, waiting, and hoping that whatever happens next doesn’t create another storm we have to weather.
