Day 7: Library Expedition

It's Day 7, and I figured it was about time to get my act together. After a week of just scraping by in lectures, avoiding group project work, and faking my way through Business Statistics, I decided it was finally time to hit the books. The library was my battlefield.

I knew it was going to be a challenge. The library on campus wasn’t exactly a cosy, quiet place. It was more like a battleground where students went to fight for desk space, battle through piles of textbooks, and engage in mental warfare with overdue assignments. But I was ready.

I grabbed my bag and headed over, telling myself this was going to be productive. I walked into the library and was immediately greeted by the usual scene: students hunched over their laptops, a couple of people asleep on bean bags (not studying, obviously), and the faint smell of coffee from the vending machines.

I headed up to the third floor, which was supposed to be the ‘quiet zone.’ But when I got there, every desk was taken. I mentally noted all the people who were just taking up space and not actually studying—like the dude scrolling through memes or the girl doodling instead of looking at her textbook.

Finally, I spotted an empty desk in the corner. The catch? It was right next to the infamous guy who talks to himself while he studies. I’d heard stories about him—apparently, he can’t help but narrate his thoughts out loud, especially when he’s working on assignments. He whispers, but it can totally throw you into a spiral of confusion.

I sat down, took out my laptop, and opened my Financial Accounting notes. I had barely gotten through the first page when the guy next to me began.

‘Okay, debit… debit means increase, right? No wait, that’s credit—no, wait…’

I tried to concentrate, but it was impossible. Every time I looked at the screen, his voice would break into my thoughts. “A loan is what? Oh, it’s a reduction, right? But wait, what if it’s an asset…?"

I tried to tune him out, but my mind was all over the place. After about twenty minutes, I noticed I wasn’t even really reading anymore. Instead, it felt like I was listening to him have this intense back-and-forth about accounting. It was like watching a play, but I couldn’t tell who was the good guy or the bad guy.

Finally, I gave up. I grabbed my stuff and headed down to the first floor. Maybe it was the energy of the actual library crowd that got to me, but it felt like a war zone.As I walked by the library café, I spotted a bunch of my friends hanging out. They were laughing and chatting over their coffees, definitely not hitting the books.

I walked over and casually joined them, telling myself it was just a ‘break’—a ‘strategic retreat,’ if you will. But we ended up talking about everything except school: random memes, the latest football match, and what we were doing for the weekend.

At that point, I just had to face it—I wasn't getting anything done today. But the more I thought about it, the more I realised that studying isn't just about hitting the books nonstop. Sometimes, it's all about knowing when to take a break, relax for a bit, and come back feeling refreshed.

Lesson of the day: The library can get pretty distracting, and honestly, it’s cool to take a break and just go with the flow. You can't study non-stop without going a little crazy. Who knows, maybe I’ll actually buckle down and focus tomorrow. Maybe.
