Day 35: Classroom Comedy Hour

Today started like any other day, but little did I know, it would turn into a comedy show in the most unexpected way. The morning lecture was one of those painfully long sessions where even the professor seemed bored. It was Business Ethics—important, sure, but not exactly the stuff of thrillers.

I had barely settled into my seat when Faisal leaned over and whispered, “Bet you I can make you laugh before this lecture’s over.” I rolled my eyes, knowing full well he was going to try something ridiculous. Faisal, the self-proclaimed comedian of the class, never missed an opportunity to turn a mundane situation into his personal stage.

The professor started with a case study about corporate social responsibility. While I was trying to follow along, Faisal scribbled something on a piece of paper and slid it onto my desk. It read: What do you call a business class where no one’s paying attention? Prof-itless. I stifled a laugh and glared at him, but he just grinned, clearly pleased with himself.

As the lecture continued, Faisal upped the ante. He started miming exaggerated reactions to the professor’s monotone delivery—pretending to fall asleep, then jolting awake like he’d just realized he’d missed the lottery numbers. I tried to stay focused, but every time I looked at him, he was doing something even more absurd.

The tipping point came when the professor asked for a volunteer to explain the difference between ethics and law. Faisal shot his hand up before anyone else could, and I immediately knew something was about to go down.

Standing at the front of the class, Faisal cleared his throat and said with a perfectly straight face, “Ethics is knowing the difference between right and wrong. Law is knowing you’ll get caught if you choose wrong.”

The room erupted in laughter, including the professor, who, to his credit, managed to recover quickly. “While that’s not exactly textbook,” he said, “it’s not entirely wrong either.” Faisal took a mock bow before returning to his seat, basking in the glory of his comedic victory.

After that, the mood in the room shifted. Everyone seemed more awake, more engaged. Even the professor seemed to relax a little, cracking a joke of his own about how businesses could use a sense of humor to connect with their customers.

By the end of the lecture, I was still smiling. As much as I hate to admit it, Faisal’s antics had actually made the session bearable.

Lesson of the day: A little humor goes a long way, even in the most serious situations. And when you’ve got a friend like Faisal, every day is a comedy show waiting to happen.
