Eddie's Mental Diary

Today was supposed to be a productive study session at the library. The plan was simple: get there early, work for a few hours, and then head back to the dorm to relax. But like most of my plans, this one went south quickly.

Faisal and I arrived at the library at 9 AM, determined to knock out our assignments. The quiet ambiance, the endless shelves of textbooks, and the smell of freshly printed paper usually get me into a productive mindset. I sat down at one of the study tables, cracked open my textbook, and began outlining ideas for an essay on market structure. Faisal, as usual, spent the first half hour trying to convince me that a 3-minute break to watch funny cat videos wasn’t going to derail our productivity. I reluctantly agreed, and by the time I looked up, an hour had passed.

By 2 PM, we had barely accomplished anything. Faisal’s “research” consisted mostly of reading memes, and I had managed to write two paragraphs of an essay that barely made sense. We were both frustrated, but I didn’t want to leave. The library was supposed to be the one place where distractions couldn’t reach me, but it was proving to be just as ineffective as my room.

Then, out of nowhere, the library doors locked.

A sudden announcement came over the PA system, informing everyone that the main entrance was closed for maintenance. We could exit through the side doors, but the building would remain closed for the next hour. At first, I thought it was a joke, but sure enough, the library staff began locking down all the entrances.

Now, normally, I would’ve been annoyed, but something about being trapped in the library made the situation feel like an adventure. Faisal and I wandered around, exploring the aisles and making up stories about the people in the study booths. At one point, we even held an impromptu reading session for an elderly woman who looked confused about where her book was.

Finally, after what felt like forever, the doors opened, and we made our escape. I didn’t finish my assignment, but I walked away with a strange sense of satisfaction.

Lesson of the day: Sometimes, the best moments in the library aren’t the ones spent working.
